Sorry for delay...have been busy moving files to new computer and that involves a portable hard drive and THREE different operating systems. >.>;
So yes. I've never heard of the book or the character, and google didn't get me a description of her either, so I'm not sure what exactly she's supposed to look like.
What I can say is that she looks rather strange. And I want to track down the book, now. n.n
The colors on the skin are a bit muddy, she has a sort of...non-shiney wetness to her. Because of the beetle-head thing, I purely have no idea which way she's facing, which makes the finger painting thing a bit more disturbing/confusing. I think she needs more tendons showing in her neck to help indicate which way her head is facing. As it is, she might be looking up to the left corner, or backwards to the right (at the butterfly) depending on which is her face.
Um...excellent contrast with the yellow skin and blue shadows, and then the pink background. The spine is chillingly well done, not to mention a really cool angle. The addition of the more orangish shades of yellow for shading does help give this a more natural as opposed to cell-shaded feel.
The beetle-head has a really neat texture to it...shiney like a bug's carapace, but also more flat, like hair.
Your light source is unclear, which both is distracting and adds to the entire surreal feel of this. If anything, I would play with the shadows on her body a bit around the boobs and ribs, since it falls between inhumanly proportioned and masculine.
